Free English language classes are available in Onehunga for migrants and refugees needing to improve their spoken and written English. Run by EmployNZ, the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programmes are accredited, and available for New Zealand citizens and residents who are 19 years and over.

Anita Smith, EmployNZ’s Auckland regional manager, says that their 20-week ESOL courses are taught by experienced and passionate teachers. “We are proud of the fact that we are able to support students in a safe and supportive environment,” she says. The courses are designed to cover a wide range of English language levels, and a student’s language skills are initially assessed so that they can be placed in a class that caters to their needs and interests. The courses range from Beginners, Elementary (English Language for Everyday Life in New Zealand), and Pre-Intermediate (English for Work & Study).

Throughout the 20 weeks, students are assessed regularly on their progress in speaking, listening, reading and writing.  Although the courses are tailored to make the lessons interesting and fun, there are high expectations of progress being made, and homework is set most evenings. “Attendance is important, so you keep up with the class,” says Anita.

EmployNZ CEO, Diane Meikle, says that the English classes make a real difference to people’s lives by broadening their language skills and enabling them to assimilate more easily into their new lives in New Zealand. “They are uplifting and life changing,” she says.
