The 2024-25 racing season at the Prestige Pools Waikaraka Park Speedway got off to a delayed start due to torrential rain, so the Auckland Modified Champs took place the following day.

However, the biggest news of the season arrived three days later when Auckland Council approved an $11 million upgrade to the speedway. This development is part of the plan to close Western Springs Speedway and move the races to Waikaraka Park.

The funding ensures that this is the last season with the track and pits in their current state. A new track, safety wall, safety fence and lights will be upgraded to meet international standards, along with an expanded pit area with dedicated vehicle stands. In addition, the 60-year old ablution block on the west side will also be replaced with modern facilities.

Racing promoter, Bruce Robertson, who manages events at both speedways, described the council funding as “a silver lining” to the Western Springs closure, adding the 30-year lease at Waikaraka guarantees the future of speedway racing in Auckland.

Members of the Auckland Stock and Saloon Car Club are ecstatic about the upgrades, as it’s their goal to make Waikaraka the best quarter-mile track in the southern hemisphere. The new development is just the first stage of that process, as new grandstands and corporate facilities are also on the agenda.

The upgrades won’t only benefit the speedway either. The new ablution block will also serve the playing fields nearby, a welcome addition for the cricket and football players too.

With the arrival of classes like the midget and sprint cars from Western Springs, Waikaraka will host more race weekends, with increased attendance and a major boost for local businesses.

Construction will begin after the current season in May, and the upgrades should be completed by Labour Weekend, the start of the 2025/2026 season.
