Onehunga gears up for new roundabout2 min read

Alex Gage-Brown hopes the new roundabout will create a better flow of traffic.

Motorists in Grey Street can anticipate a smoother commute, thanks to a new roundabout planned for the Onehunga Mall and Grey Street intersection.

The Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board is investing almost $1 million for the project, which is designed to streamline traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents. The roundabout will also bring much-needed improvements, including a dedicated cycle ramp, a pedestrian crossing for safer foot traffic, and a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians. These additions aim to encourage alternative modes of transport, and create a safer environment for everyone.

Local business owner, Alex Gage-Brown, owner of 4 Square Onehunga, welcomes the development, especially for the potential to ease traffic congestion on Grey Street.

“Several cars back up on Grey Street near the church, making it difficult to turn right, or go straight,” says Alex. “This roundabout should definitely improve things.”

However, she expressed the importance of keeping the street parking.

Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Chair, Maria Meredith, says road safety and improved connections are a high priority for the board.

“It’s important the community feels safe when travelling around, and it’s great we can allocate these funds to Onehunga, so that safer connections are available for those walking and biking around the area.”

The board invested $640,000 to the new roundabout, and improvements to the Eastview Low Traffic Area in Glen Innes. Within the current three-year term of the MaungakiekieTāmaki Local Board, $891,000 has been allocated through the Transport Capital Fund, over the course of the term, and Auckland Transport is looking to cover the remaining $422,000.

The overall cost of the roundabout in the current three-year term is between $1.3-1.4 million.

Auckland Transport is currently finalising the roundabout’s design, and will hold public engagement sessions in July or August to gather community feedback.

The project is expected to be completed by June 2026, or possibly earlier, subject to public feedback and final approval from the local board.
