After 40 years of dedication to his craft and community, David’s Hair Care on Mount Smart Road will close its doors, marking the end of an era for the beloved barbershop.
Owner, David, has been a familiar face to generations of customers, from everyday locals to sporting greats like Jonah Lomu, Doug Howlett, Joe Rokocoko, Steve Price and Tony Kemp.
David had no idea who Jonah was when he sat in the barber chair – only later, when he saw him playing in the Sevens on TV, did he realise who he had given a haircut to.
“Jonah once visited the shop before an All Blacks game, and he wanted one line shaved in his eyebrow. I gave him two lines to represent his position on the field, and it stayed,” says David.
Originally from Fiji, David moved to New Zealand with his 10-year old son, Zianel, in 1985.
His wife and the rest of the family followed later, and over the years, the barbershop became more than just a business – it became a pillar of the community, particularly for the local island population.
“I loved my customers so I didn’t mind working seven days a week,” says David. Zianel says his dad doesn’t take time off, except for a hernia surgery.
“I will always remember the friendships I made and the memories I created in the barbershop.”
While the doors may be closing, David’s legacy will remain strong in the hearts of those he has served over the years.
