Housing boom hits Onehunga3 min read

Onehunga is soon going to be home to over 700 new homes as a development boom has hit the town.

Kāinga Ora is building 400 of these homes, Ockham is developing 210 homes in Jordan Avenue, and the Onehunga Mall Club is building an apartment block that will house 102 one and two-bedroom apartments.

Resource consent has been given by the Auckland Council to build majority of the homes, with only a few still in the lodging stage.

Ockham states that Manaaki is being developed in Jordan Avenue, in ‘Auckland’s most compelling surburb’ – Onehunga

The city’s green spaces, and the idea that you’re just 9km to the airport and 8km to the city, makes the place the perfect area to develop the homes.

“Maanaki takes our commitment to lifestyle and community to new heights,” says a spokesperson from Ockham.

Featuring 210 apartments, including 87 KiwiBuilds, Manaaki has a range of one, one-plus study and two-bedroom homes available. There are a number of three-bedroom apartments being developed too. Included, is a massive residents’ lounge, a 12m x 3m swimming pool (with adjoining shallow pool for

families), in-house café, dedicated work-from-home office in each building, and landscaped communal gardens. On the corner of Manukau Road and Trafalgar Streets, 24 townhouses are being developed by a private developer.

Under the Kāinga Ora banner, the largest of these developments is on the corner of Mount Smart Road and Jordan Avenue, where 185 terraced homes and apartments will be built on 1.57 hectares of land. There will be 16 one-bedroom homes, 124 two-bedroom and 46 three-bedroom homes. Due to the size of this development, it is estimated that it will be completed in the second half of 2025.

In Felix Street, 51 apartments, twin unit duplex and standalone homes are being built on 13,356 square meters. It will comprise of 18 one-bedroom, 6 two-bedroom, 4 three-bedroom, 15 four-bedroom, 3 five-bedroom, 5 six-bedroom homes and a community room. The estimated completion time is the second half of this year.

Forty-two duplex, standalone two-storey houses, three storey walk-up, and two- and three-storey terraced homes will be  developed on Rockfield Road and Edmonton Road. They will have 6 one-bedroom, 24 four-bedroom, 8 three-bedroom and 4 four bedroom homes. The estimated time frame for completion is at the end of this year.

Three three-storey buildings will be developed on the corner of Mt Smart Road and Roosevelt Avenue, which will have 39 homes. The homes will consist of 9 one-bedroom, 21 two bedroom, 9 three-bedroom and a community room. It is also due to be completed at the end of this year.

Kāinga Ora is developing a 4-5 storey apartment complex

for senior citizens in Alfred Street. It will comprise of 28 one-

bedroom units, a community room, meeting room, drying room

and a conceirge. Fourteen duplex and standalone homes will be developed in Mays Road and Captain Springs Road, and will

include 4 two-bedroom, 4 three-bedroom, 4 four-bedroom and

2 five-bedroom homes.

Namata Road will see 12 terraced and duplex homes being built:

6 two-bedroom, 1 three-bedroom and 5 five-bedroom homes.

Eleven homes will be developed in Mays Road, six duplex

homes in Church Street; six homes in Cowell Place, four in State Avenue; and three homes in Alfred Street.

At the time of going to press, Kāinga Ora stated they are in the process of replacing 400 old state houses with 500 new state

homes. Around 600 affordable and market homes will also be

built over the next seven years. On completion, approximately

1,100 new homes would have been built in Oranga.
