A new skate park for Onehunga1 min read
Reading Time: < 1 minuteA new skate park, outdoor gym, and basketball half-court facility is coming to Onehunga Bay Reserve later this year. Funded by Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, the project is expected to begin in March or April, and will take up to 12 weeks to complete, dependent on resource consent approval. Auckland Council has commissioned Bespoke Landscape Architects to prepare the concept design, with input from local skaters and residents.
The skate park will be situated near the two playgrounds and the existing vert ramp. A Vans Park Series-style flow bowl, which is the blueprint for the park skateboarding discipline at the 2020 Olympics, will have mostly 1.4m high sections with two extensions. Other features will include a spine, pump bump, hips, and a channel for beginners to roll down instead of dropping in. There is also provision fora new, larger vert ramp to replace the existing vert ramp, however construction of this will be subject to additional funding.
There will also be a new outdoor gym area, designed to promote body resistance-based exercise for a range of different fitness levels. This replaces the previous feasibility concept that showed exercise equipment set along the path between the car park and lagoon. In addition, a basketball half-court, designed to official FIBA 3×3 court-size requirements, will be able to host 3×3 games, as well as casual use.
We’re looking forward to seeing and trying out the finished result in Spring, and will meanwhile keep our readers posted on its progress.
