The Onehunga Māngere United Football Club joined forces with Sport NZ and The Period Place to provide sanitary products for their female players, to ensure their sporting season is as comfortable as possible, and their periods aren’t a barrier to their participation.

This includes a free pad and tampon dispenser in a women’s bathroom at the clubhouse, which will be topped up regularly thanks to Sport New Zealand. A pack will be provided to each women’s and girls’ team for their kit bags too, with items like hand sanisiter, wipes and period products, that will be replenished with the support of The Period Place.

“As a community club, we are always looking at ways we can help to support our local players and community,” says Steph Jones, one of the club’s two Women’s Football Coordinators, alongside Rose Pham.

“Our club colours are red and white so that means we play in red shirts and white shorts. As you can imagine, the shorts aren’t the most ideal colour to play in. This initiative helps us to make sure all our female members feel supported, and have free and easy access to period products when needed, so they can focus on their game ahead and play worry free.

“The dispenser will also be accessible to visiting teams, parents, supporters and anyone who looks to hire our club facilities throughout the year.”

The programme started after a year-long research project by Sport NZ, which placed free period products in 48 community sport clubs nationwide. The evaluation found that providing free period products increased player confidence and participation; reduced stigma around menstruation in sport; helped clubs foster open conversations about female health and created a more inclusive environment for women and girls.
