Robot carnage smashes Onehunga2 min read
Reading Time: 2 minutesRobot Rampage launched its new arena in Onehunga with an exciting two-day tournament that drew a full house for its first featherweight class (13.6kg) robots.
A dozen robots battled intensely over two days, smashing each other up in pursuit of the title. Casualties were heavy, and between bouts, the pit area buzzed as teams scrambled to repair damaged robots, and get them ready for the next bout.
After a fierce competition, Derive S claimed the winning title. Others faced tough losses, like Borris, who underwent a complete rebuild overnight after a heavy beating on Saturday, and less than a minute into its first bout on Sunday, it burst into flames.
Adding to the excitement, there were also a number of bouts featuring the heavyweight (113kg) robots that appear on TV shows like Battlebots and Robot Wars. The two-time champion of the US TV series Battlebots, End Game was the star attraction.
Robot Rampage was founded by Nick Mabey and Jack Barker, the same masterminds behind End Game, which became the first non-American robot to win Battlebots. The duo met at Auckland University’s Robotics Club, and formed a partnership that led to End Games’ TV triumphs. They have now turned their passion for electronic carnage into a business.
Robot Rampage is not just about tournaments either. They provide all the tech and equipment for building robots, and host various experiences, like corporate events, stag and hen dos and family events. The arena can be hired, and Robot Rampage will provide starter kits for beginners and help you build your own robot to compete in your own tournament.
For those seeking stress relief – End Game can be hired to smash up a household appliance of your choice.
The next tournament will be held in February, and for more information, go to robotrampage.co.nz
