Sponsorship sought for Māngere Bridge School playground2 min read
Reading Time: 2 minutesA new playground is in place at Māngere Bridge School, reflecting the local environment and history, and using traditional Māori playground concepts. They just need a bit more of a funding boost to get it complete.
The school raised more than $200,000 towards the playground, and is seeking sponsorship to complete the last few elements, including adding twister rings, loop ladders and gladiator rings.
“Sponsorship is a chance for local businesses and organisations to be involved in the school, and support us, while having their name included on a plaque in our playground and promoted through our other channels, “ says principal, Bernice Mata’utia.
“Whānau connected with the school can also get involved, by sponsoring one of the small climbing logs, and have their family name carved into it. That way they can see it each time they visit and know they’ve contributed to something for the tamariki for years to come.”
The playground was designed with student input over the last several years, and reflects the legends, history and environment of the local area. This includes the neighbouring Te Pane o Mataoho/Māngere Mountain and the traditional pā structures, while a stingray shaped-trail on the ground and a wooden waka pay tribute to the legend of Hape, who was guided to the Manukau Harbour by a taniwha in the shape of a stingray. The taniwha is said to still be there today and is known as Kaiwhare, keeper of the Manukau.
The natural features of the playground follow te Māra, or traditional Māori playgrounds, with the play items (aro-takaro) helping develop skills and connecting the tamariki to nature, including kō-papa (climbing logs), hikiekie (jumping logs), a torere tree and a kōkiri (beam traditionally used over water).
“The playground reflects who we are as a school and where we come from, and the students feel a real sense of pride and connection to it,” says Bernice.
“It’s there to challenge our children and inspire creative play.”
Anyone interested in sponsorship should contact the school on 09 636 7304 or admin@mangerebridge.school.nz.
