The space outside St Peter’s Church has never been the same since the mosaic chess table, one of Onehunga’s much photographed pieces of street art, was destroyed in a late-night incident involving a  car. Thankfully, the nearby ceramic sofa was left unscathed.

Following the event, the Onehunga Community News Facebook page was flooded with heart-felt comments and messages from local residents, and people with connections to Onehunga. Many questioned the future of the now-vacant space.

Plans to replace it are challenging, as replicating the original is proving to be a hard task for the Onehunga Business Association (OBA). OBA administration and membership manager, Laura Hulbert, recently contacted the ceramic artist, Karen Kennedy, but she says “although we are looking to replace it, it may not be exactly the same as the original table design.”

Laura says, “While Karen Kennedy was the one who came up with the artistic design, it was a concrete engineer who actually built the foundation and base of the table. Our contacts at Auckland Council are helping us to find a new engineer who would be willing to take on such a small project.”

The OBA has submitted an insurance claim for the table, and they are awaiting further updates before deciding their next move. Watch this space.
