Work has continued at six archaeological sites at the Waiapu Precinct development after the Auckland Council was given approval from the General Authority from Heritage New Zealand.
Construction was halted after the discovery of 19th century rubbish deposits uncovered during the works.
These, and any future finds, will be documented, logged in the appropriate heritage databases, and removed from the works site.
Gerrard Beeson Place
The new road on Gerrard Beeson Place has made progress and the new tree pit is almost complete. Access via Arthur Street will be opened in July.
Lower level
Work on the retaining walls and stairs that connect the lower level to the middle level has continued. At the section from Meat World to Angkor Bakery, the trench for underground services, building kerbs, gardens, and drainage is complete, and there is a new vehicle entrance in Church Street.
The existing entrances on Church Street and Waiapu Lane closed in mid-May, and access will be via two entrances on Selwyn Street. Loading and service access will be kept for the businesses on Waiapu Lane.
The parking area near Woolworths, along with the new vehicle access from Church Street, will open in October.
