The Waiapu Precinct project is taking shape, with the new pedestrian crossing in Church Street now complete.

“Trees are being removed to allow for large-diameter pipes, with seven new tree pits being prepared, and native trees will be planted later,” says project manager for the Auckland Urban Development Office, James Buckley. “The historic oak tree will remain, and we prune the lower branches carefully and make sure its roots are protected.”

The stormwater upgrades and utility trenching in the area in the lower carpark are causing massive disruptions on the road. James acknowledges the challenges businesses are facing during construction.

“This short-term disruption can feel long-term, and we genuinely feel for the businesses affected,” he says. “But the outcome will be a safer, greener and better-connected precinct for the Onehunga community.”

Work in the lower carpark is scheduled for completion by June 2026, but the team is hopeful for a March finish. James urges the community to support the small businesses impacted by the construction.

Gerrard Beeson Place, where wastewater upgrades are taking place, is currently one-way and will remain a one-way once the project is complete (north to south direction). The 2-hour parking limit will also be reinstated. When the new Woolworths opens, around 150 parking bays will be available too.

“I’m aware that parking is still a concern for many residents, as this is a big scale job. There are several off-street parking options available in the interim,” says James.

Besides a new supermarket, playground, walking and cycling connections and a public plaza, the precinct will also include four residential development sites, which will be built once a developer has been found.
