New Zealand’s prime minister, Christopher Luxon, visited Onehunga in August as part of a visit to the Maungakiekie electorate, taking time to meet, and pose for the obligatory selfies, with members of various business associations.

The informal gathering was organised by MP Greg Fleming’s electorate office. He says, with the recent boundary changes, there are now four business associations in the electorate, and they realised the prime minister’s visit to the area was a great chance to bring them all together. Epic Taproom was chosen for the event, due to its central location between the various associations.

Members of the Onehunga, Panmure, Ellerslie and Penrose Business Associations turned up in big numbers, with more than 200 people filling the taproom. The prime minister received a warm welcome from many of the crowd, and spent most of his time going from table to table chatting with as many people as possible.

Although the main focus was a chance for local business people to meet the prime minister face-to-face, he did give a brief speech acknowledging the difficult period it has been for small businesses, and answered a few questions.

The PM spent about an hour at the event, noting that with the Warriors’ game at Mt Smart Go Media Stadium that evening, he didn’t want to delay anyone heading to the match.
