Piper the pawsome police pup2 min read

Airedale terriers were among the first breeds used as police dogs, and Onehunga’s own Piper is proudly keeping up the long tradition – just in her own unique way.
Rather than chasing criminals, she’s helping to prevent crime before it happens by building strong connections in the community alongside Community Constable Don Allan.
Piper has been by Don’s side since she was a puppy, serving as a community liaison and unofficial partner. She has been instrumental in Don’s community-focused role, in a unique set up, with Don unaware of any other community officers accompanied by a dog like Piper.
“She has helped break down barriers. People see her coming down the street and smile, and she actually prefers people to other dogs,” says Don.
With an official clearance from the Auckland District Commander to accompany Don on duty, Piper – who turns 10 in June – proudly wears a police harness and has attended Christmas parades, schools and daycare visits, community festivals and official events. Her confidence and comfort around people of all ages make her the perfect outreach companion. She has also visited the Auckland City police hub on College Hill and the Police Northern Communications Centre in Mt Wellington.
When Don and his wife first thought about getting a dog, Don knew he didn’t want to leave his pet at home all day while they were at work. He got approval from his managers to bring a dog into the workplace, and they found the perfect pup for their family. Her official registered name at birth is Playful Piper from Holbrook, named by her Rangiora-based breeder, and it fits her well, with Airedales known for their playful and outgoing nature. Although Piper has slowed down a little with age, she remains a familiar and much-loved presence in the community and will be seen at many more events around Onehunga.
