Parking time limits on Onehunga Mall are set to increase to one hour, following strong support from local businesses and backing from the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board.
The move comes after the road ranked second in Auckland for the number of parking infringements issued last year.
According to Auckland Transport data, Onehunga Mall recorded 8,782 parking tickets between January and October 2025, placing it just behind Princes Street near Auckland University (10,626 infringements). The Mall also ranked sixth overall for revenue generated, with a whopping $196,308 collected in infringement fees.
In response to ongoing concerns from businesses and shoppers, Business Onehunga formally supported a proposal to extend parking time limits following a member survey conducted in November 2025. Feedback showed overwhelming support for increasing the current P30 limit to P60, operating Monday to Sunday from 8am to 6pm. Existing P10 zones, loading bays and mobility parking would remain unchanged.
“The proposed change aims to encourage more people to visit the town centre, spend longer shopping, access daily services and choose Onehunga as a destination,” says manager of Business Onehunga, Victoria Puxty. “Extending the parking will better support local retailers and help the town centre compete with large shopping malls which offer free parking.”
A meeting held in December between Auckland Council’s parking team and the local board presented findings from a town centre parking review.
Parking has been a hot topic in Onehunga in recent months. The Mall is one of the suburb’s busiest retail strips, with constant demand for short-stay parking. Some locals argue strict enforcement discourages shoppers, while others say regular monitoring is necessary to ensure fair access and keep traffic moving.
Auckland Transport has previously stated that parking enforcement is intended to encourage compliance and access, rather than generate revenue.
With proposed changes now gaining momentum, many in the community are hopeful the extended parking limits will strike a better balance between access, enforcement and supporting local businesses.
At the time of printing, a date for public consultation had not yet been confirmed.
