Musician Niklas Meads has paid tribute to one of his favourite places to sit and play guitar with new track, Cornwall Park.
The ode to the local landmark features on his EP Solitude, released in 2025, his sixth EP since 2020. He also released a full album, Natural Evolution, in 2020, and the talented guitarist and singer is looking ahead to a future of more live gigs and a long songwriting career.
Niklas, 22, started learning guitar at age seven, but it wasn’t until Covid lockdowns in 2020 that he began writing music and recording seriously, describing this time as pivotal for both his music and his playing ability. His guitar teacher played another key part in encouraging Niklas to pursue music seriously.
“My teacher motivated me to write and perform, to care about it, to work hard.”
He is now passing that inspiration on to a new generation, teaching guitar weekly, along with studying, songwriting, gigging and part-time work in marketing.
His musical tastes run from James Taylor and Paul Simon to soul legend Otis Redding and prog-rockers Dream Theater. John Mayer is another inspiration, as he’s a hugely skilled guitarist.
Much of Niklas’ music has been recorded and mixed in his bedroom, with a few tracks produced in the home studio of drummer friend, Alex Beattie. His music can be found on the major streaming platforms, and his website, niklasmeads.com.
He also receives some professional support through the PRS Guitars Pulse Artist programme, which supports PRS players around the world, and Niklas has been selected for the second year running.
With final exams now complete for his conjoint music and commerce degree, Niklas aims to combine marketing and music in his future career, with his day job helping to cover the costs of recording and releasing music. He also wants to keep developing as a performer, and play more live shows.
He plays regularly at venues around Auckland, including Clevedon Farmers Market, and at special events and weddings. He is available for bookings through his website.
