Grammar TEC triumphs in final
After falling short in the semi-finals last year, the Grammar TEC Women’s Rugby Team returned in 2019 to claim redemption.
Following an impressive year with no losses, they finished the season by beating a strong Drury team 17 points to 10 in the final, gaining championship status in their grade.
Following their disappointing loss in 2018, the group was determined to return with a better result, and began preseason training early in December. Thirty players signed up for the new year; a handful were old teammates, while many were joining the squad for the first time.
Malo Maunga and Frankie Schaumkel continued in the roles of coaches, alongside Auckland Rugby development officer, Tidah Leaupepe, who is also a valuable member of the team. Manager,Vee Fuaaletoelau, filled the managerial role, and physio Vib Singh made sure the girls were in top notch physically.
Following their triumphant season, former One Tree Hill College student, Ahea Langi, and Onehunga High School former pupil, Renee Folaumoetu’I, were both named to join the Auckland Storm and Thunder training squad for 2019.
“Our season went exceptionally well, exceeding all expectations and goals set during our preseason. Rugby has always been my passion, and being selected for the Auckland Higher Performance wider squad is an honour for me. I am super proud to be a part of GTEC, especially the Lionesses,” sys Renee.
Holly Wade, another GTEC player, says they want to develop women and girls in rugby. “We have so many aspirations for the upcoming years. Our goal is to build a pathway for girls attending local high schools, to be able to bridge into rugby. We hope to boost the game in the area, so new players are welcome to sign up for next season.”
The team would like to thank their sponsors and supporters, GTEC Director of Rugby, Daniel King, for the club support, and a special thanks to friends and families who were beside them all the way.
