Wanted – memories and photos of Port of Onehunga

Jeremy Ruane is a man on a mission. He is looking for contributions of memories and photos from the local community about the Port of Onehunga. It can be a recollection about the port or your favourite ship – but above all he wants photos of visiting ships, either alongside the wharf or under way on the Manukau.

Jeremy says that with the port closing, and now being redeveloped, he wants to post memories and photos permanently on a website he runs, “so those memories and mementos aren't lost forever.

“One of my objectives with the site is to ensure that the history of the Port will never be lost, and to make it a one-stop shop for just about everything anyone could wish to know about the Port of Onehunga.”

For almost three years the local resident has dedicated part of his soccer website to the history of the Port of Onehunga. There’s a list of every ship which has visited since July 1913, and photos and video footage of the comings and goings of numerous ships and trawlers. There’s also detailed records of nearly every ship which has visited Onehunga since 1946, until the Port's closure to freight operations at the end of November 2016.
