Onehunga’s very own recycling centre has been busy creating some new initiatives, to help enrich our environment.
The RePurpose Community Recycling Centre is a joint effort between Grey Lynn 2030, and the Earth Action Trust. The non-profit foundation aims to prevent unnecessary waste at landfills by reducing, reusing, and upcycling household items. Volunteers seek new ways to revitalise donated and used goods. Unwanted items in good condition are re-homed, and re-sold, from their shop on site.
The centre has created a new line of gift baskets, put together by dedicated staff members which they say are made with love. When a basket is purchased as a gift for $25, it is then donated to a child or family in need, who have come from a refugee background. Baskets are assembled from clean, quality, second-hand goods, and can be purchased online, via their Givealitte page.
Grey Lynn 2030 chairpersons, Colinda Rowe and Brigette Sistig, aim to spread the word about their efforts. They commented “It’s nice to give someone a gift, that has a personal touch. Our baskets, each unique, have been on display at local events and markets. It’s rewarding, to put a smile on a child’s face.”
The funds raised will be used to help run the centre, and continue their work. You can donate online, or pop in to view their selection of baskets at their base - located at 20A Alfred Street in Onehunga. They are open to the public twice a week - Thursday and Saturday, from 10am to 3pm. Feel free to drop off your own used quality items, or browse their store for something new.
