Heavyweight Boxing contender Joseph Parker and his brother John paid a visit to their old school, Marcellin, on Tuesday, 6th of December.
Accompanied by cornerman John Afamasaga, another old boy, Joseph and John attended a Junior School assembly and handed out sports awards for the Year 7 to 10 age groups. Joe also took time out to pose for photos with some tutor groups and many of his former teachers. Some lucky children even got the chance to try the Heavyweight Championship Belt on for size.
Joseph spoke briefly to the assembly of how this visit took him back to when he was a pupil and another old boy, boxer Monty Betham, had made a similar visit. Joseph said that listening to Monty had helped him realise that he also could take on the world. Joseph finished by telling the school his personal motto was “The power comes from within” and that he also always remembered Marcellin’s motto “Seek the Best.” He told the assembley, “Whatever goals you have, if you give one hundred percent, you can achieve anything.”
After the assembly there were plenty of photos to be taken and lots of ‘fistbumps’ with the students. Plus, school caretaker Andrew Vao had dug out a copy of the 2009 Yearbook when Joseph was in Year 13, for him to sign.
Joseph read out to the assembled media what he had written as his goals for the future all those years ago. They were “To become the world heavyweight champion and get an Olympic Gold; to marry Laine K Tavita.” He admitted that he missed out on the gold medal, but he and Laine have just had their first child and Joseph promised that on Saturday night he would make it two out of three.
