Onehunga Festival returns to the seaside

Onehunga Festival returns to a seaside location this April, finding its new home at the magnificently restored Taumanu Reserve on Onehunga’s foreshore.

The festival, which began as the Onehunga Lagoon festival nearly a decade ago, was originally a community-led event. Sponsored by the council, Ports of Auckland, NZTA and local businesses, it was manned by volunteers – notably the Lions Club and Kiwanis. While work was underway to create the new foreshore, including reinventing areas around the lagoon, the festival moved to Jellicoe Park. However, the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board are delighted to announce that the festival will be held for the first time at Taumanu – the new foreshore - on Saturday 9 April (11am-3pm).  Funded by Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board, it provides a showcase for local and regional talent.

Festival-goers can also look forward to water based fun and beach games, delicious food stalls, bouncy castles and children’s entertainment. There will also be a variety of community group information stands.

Board chair Simon Randall says the festival always generates fantastic community spirit amongst participants and onlookers alike. “I’m particularly looking forward to enjoying both the activities and the location itself. This is the next significant event at Taumanu, following on from the reserve’s official opening in November.”

The board’s parks spokesperson, Brett Clark, says the festival and the foreshore are a perfect match, with plenty of park and beach space in which to relax and enjoy the day at Taumanu Reserve. There is still time to be proactively involved in the festival. You can register you interest via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
